Code Development Committee

Goals:
To provide a forum for all members to obtain informal interpretations on code issues.

To provide a Code Interpretation document for all members to use thereby providing consistency and clarity throughout each member jurisdiction for plan review, building construction and inspections.

Objectives:
To utilize the Code Development Committee as the mechanism for all members to obtain informal code interpretations and guidance on all code related issues.

Scope:
The Committee is to be comprised of licensed building code administrators from the member jurisdictions of the Florida Suncoast Chapter. The number of members is to be determined by the Board of Directors. The members will elect a chairperson to coordinate committee activities.

The process will work as follows:

  • The member submits a request for a code interpretation to the Chairperson.
  • The request must include the code language and section, what the member feels the intent is, and the request for an interpretation.
  • The Chairperson will then submit the request to each of the committee members for response by a given date.
  • The Chairperson will then compile the results, submit them to the members and ask for a consensus vote based on the responses.
  • The Chairperson will then determine the consensus decision, prepare the interpretation, obtain final committee approval, and then include it in the code interpretation document for use by all members.

Summary:
The intent of this committee is to formulate a set of interpretations that each member jurisdiction can agree upon and then utilize in their code enforcement, to provide consistency and clarity throughout all member jurisdictions. The end result will create an environment where active and associate members can feel comfortable with, and have confidence in, the utilization of the Florida Building Code throughout our membership area.
